COFAN ELDER
Ecuador 23-434
Photograph by Tass Thacker

During our bicycle trip in South America we mountain bike through the Andes and out into the rainforests of eastern Ecuador.

We spend three days living with a Cofan Indian family. Oil drilling on Cofan lands has recently brought many changes to their way of life.

Some of the Cofans have moved further into the rainforest, trying to live a traditional life far away from booming oil towns and busy roads.

Others are trying to maintain their own customs, yet embrace aspects of modern life.

The parrot feather in this man's nose is a sign of honor and respect in the village.
