YOUNG MONK
Myanmar 5643
Photograph by Tass Thacker

Myanmar used to be called Burma. The country is located between Thailand and India.

The military government is very repressive, and since 1962 has not allowed anyone in the country to have much contact with the rest of the world. Very few products are imported into Myanmar. Of the few vehicles on the roads, most are over forty years old. Travelers are only allowed to visit Myanmar for one week.

Most of the people living in Myanmar (who are still called Burmese) are very excited to meet foreigners, and learn about the rest of the world. Everyone we speak with wants a different government, but the people are powerless to make changes.

We meet this young monk one morning in a Buddhist temple.
