African Safari
Educational School Assembly Slide Programs

We bicycle through southern Africa, visit numerous National Parks, track elephants and lions on foot, and have many other exciting wildlife encounters.
We also meet a variety of people--some living in cities, others in remote tribal villages--and learn about their lifestyles, customs, clothing and jewelry.
Africa is a land of contrasts and wonder: ancient rock art and modern skyscrapers; penguins and giraffes; deserts and rainforests! Experience African Safari!
Our four-month bicycle adventure in Africa takes us through six countries:

South Africa, Namibia, Botswana,
Zimbabwe, Zambia and Lesotho.

To see a close-up map of the area we travelled, and take the challenge of finding each country on the map, double click on map quiz.

We start our journey in Capetown, South Africa, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Just off the coast we visit tiny Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president, was jailed as a political prisoner for nearly twenty years.

To learn more about Nelson Mandela, and why he was imprisoned,
double click on South African history.

The first big game park we visit on our trip is Kalahari-Gemsbok National Park in South Africa. The park is named after the gemsbok antelope, which is as big as a horse, and has one of the longest horns of any of the African antelope.

Double click on gemsbok head and horns

We spend one week exploring Kalahari-Gemsbok
National Park. Our favorite animal is the little suricat,
which in South Africa is often called a meercat.

Suricats live in groups called colonies. Wherever
they go, suricats always post a guard. The guard
stands alert on his or her back legs,
looking out for predators.

Can you guess which predators the suricats fear most?

To find out, and see a close-up of this suricats face,
double
click on more suricats.

Suricats are actually a type of mongoose.
To continue our African Safari, double click on Namibia, the next country we visit.
